10th graders have a text about "Kew Gardens" on page 166 in their textbook (Mission 2).
After reading the text, the teacher launches a challenge: on a musical background he asks the students to write a composition in the next 10 minutes on "garden" theme, writing everything that comes to their minds related to the key-word garden. Students will write as long as the music is on.
At the end of the activity, some of them will read their compositions aloud.
Interestingly, the overall tone of the compositions is influenced by the background music. If the teacher chooses "The Seasons", by Antonio Vivaldi, the students' compositions will be cheerful, describing beautiful gardens in summer or a sunny spring day with many flowers.
If the teacher chooses a hard rock song, students tend to describe the garden with trees, shadows, mazes or even potentially dangerous elements suggesting a space that you would rather not want to visit.
In general, few students seem to be influenced by the music they hear.
